20% OFF Pinot Noir^ (ENDS WED 2nd APRIL)
Ask any avid wine drinker today to propose a list of their favourite grape varieties and no doubt Pinot Noir will feature quite prominently. Even those new to the world of wine more often than not soon find affinity amidst this most alluring and charming variety. But it hasn't always been this way. Up until say a decade or so, Pinot Noir's fragile and timid nature in the vineyard and winery wasn't always being adhered to as closely as could be by many, often resulting in fairly neutral, one dimensional 'dry red' wines.

Thanks largely to a band of up and coming and established producers, the pendulum has definitely very much swung the other way when it comes to capturing every subtle nuance Pinot has to offer. Clever site selection and a greater understanding of clonal material, have ultimately provided the ideal growing conditions required for this cool climate, early ripening specialist. Furthermore, those 'established' growers now have much advantageous 'vine age' on their side, from which there are huge benefits to be gained. And of course the annual pilgrimage to Burgundy to hone their skills and craft doesn't do any harm either!
Central Otago - New Zealand
The world's southernmost wine region (not to mention one of the most spectacular) and the country's highest, provides Pinot Noir with outstanding growing conditions. It's therefore little wonder that of 2000 hectares under vine, approximately 70% is planted to Pinot. Cool yes for the majority of the time, but a climate best described as 'semi continental', is also responsible for some brutal, short bursts of heat over the summer months. Add a landscape that in many places resembles something out the Grand Canyon with its rocky, rugged outcrops and attaining ripeness can often prove faultless. Dry autumns with low humidity resulting in purity and complexity of fruit flavours that typically resemble a 'rounder' and 'fuller' style of Pinot Noir.

Sourced from a blend of vineyards located in the spectacular Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago, this is a consistently classic example highlighted by its abundance of sweet berry fruit. Mid to full in the mouth, the finish is driven by fine silky tannins.

Yarra Valley - Victoria
Of all the regions in Australia where Pinot Noir does its best thing, it's fairly safe to say that the topic of climate change here is most applicable.  Long gone are the days when vineyards nestled on the 'Valley Floor' are likely to be suitable for the production of premium Pinot Noir.  Like the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley is best broken into 'sub regions'.  There really is no 'one' region, with soil types, alongside climatic characteristics each playing a distinctive role.  For example the 'Lower Yarra' is warmer (think 'Coldstream' and 'Gruyere') and more exposed to northerly winds and the influence of Western Port Bay.  More generous flavours preside. In the 'Upper Yarra' the terrain is higher, cooler and more protected resulting in later ripening.  'Woori Yallock' and 'Hoddles Creek' fall into this area with  'finesse' and 'perfume' often used to describe these wines.

Yarra Valley - Victoria
Typically low in elevation, rarely getting to 100m above sea level, the Mornington Peninsula with its cool and tempered 'maritime' climate is a haven for Pinot Noir. A recent geological study of the region divided it into three sectors.  Around Moorooduc/Tuerong in the north (think Yabby Lake and Mooroduc Estate), sand based over brown clay loam gives dark and generous flavours.  Centrally, Merricks brown loams with red ferrosol result in a slight more perfumed/earthy expression. In the southern sectors of Red Hill/Main Ridge the soil is red ferrosol dominant with brown loams. Together with the higher elevation the wines from Red Hill typically display exquisitely delicate, fragrant qualities.  The oldest clone in the region, MV6, is a great all-rounder for all sectors, essentially giving generously fruity expressions with supple tannins.

Tasmanian Pinot Noir contributes less than .5% of Australian national wine grape production! Its little wonder that just under 50% of the state vineyards are dedicated to the variety, given it's temperate maritime climate that is constantly cooled by prevailing westerly winds off the Southern Ocean, creating conditions that are generally free from extremes in temperature. The ancient Tasmanian soils range from well drained sandy soil eroded from sedimentary rock through gravelly loams and clay loams, duplexes and into rich, alluvial clays. Generally speaking Tasmanian Pinot Noir shows hearty and bright, dark red fruit characters such as cherry, cranberry and wild raspberry, often with hints of spice and soft, supple tannins.
