Vive la France

Bordeaux

The name Bordeaux is familiar even if you've never sampled a bottle. It's one of the three major wine-producing regions in France (the others being Burgundy and Champagne) and home to the world's major wine fair, Vinexpo. Built around its port, access to the sea has meant that it's been France's major wine exporting city. The Gironde River runs through the middle of Bordeaux, dividing the region in two. The Le Bank, including Médoc and Graves, is known for its cabernet sauvignon blends. To the east, the right bank includes the appellations of Saint Emilion, which has made its name on merlot blends. As a simple rule of thumb, the more specific the region designation on the label the higher the quality of the wine.
