Product Details

The principle behind Haselgrove first cut wines revolves around the winemaking term ‘first cut’ in which during the pressing cycle the softer free run juice/wine is separated from the second cut or pressings. This principle flows through to the style of First Cut wines, producing wines with great drinkability well suited to modern dishes.

The Shiraz is bright and intensively aromatic, the nose sings of the vintage and variety. Fresh cute herbs and red berry fruits with subtle spice and complimentary charry oak. Fresh fruited with excellently balanced acidity and finely structured. This is a wine that will grow in stature as it ages.

Where to start, really. At this point Haselgrove First Cut series could just about be written about in folklore and song. This is a winery that puts the rest of Mclaren Vale to shame, and James Halliday knows it. Their First Cut Shiraz was an absolute attacker out the glass and I loved every second of it. The palate was punchy. Raspberry, licorice, mother's jam - it's like going to a buffet and all they have on the menu is nostalgia. The finish doesn't just linger, it stays with you, like a fond memory of your first defining wine experience. But perhaps it's the aroma that really steals the show. Be prepared for this one to smack you about and tell you it's your fault - the plum, the cherry, the cedar - the First Cut Shiraz isn't taking any hostages. If I have one complaint, it's that they don't yet provide a 1500ml bottle. Don't cellar this one, that's torture for the poor thing. After all, the First Cut Shiraz is a gift to the McLaren Vale region and the wine industry as whole. So let it out, let it loose, and don't give it a curfew. This drop has it's youth to explore.
