A Very Bubbly Christmas

“Christmas time, mistletoe and wine…” Sir Cliff Richard was onto something when penning the lyrics to his classic Christmas hit. Indeed, no Christmas is complete without a case or two of top-class wines to help you celebrate the festive season. And much like a Christmas without cheesy tunes, the day just isn’t complete without a few bottles of fizz to help celebrate in style.

It’s that one time of the year when all the rules are thrown out the window and a cheeky glass or two alongside your Christmas breakfast is a suitably indulgent way to start your day. A special day deserves a special breakfast and a little smoked salmon, or perhaps some freshly grilled prawns will wonderfully complement a glass of sparkling. There’s no need to dust out your best bottle of vintage champagne just yet….Sometimes something fun and fruity can be equally, if not more, rewarding than a serious bottle when kicking off the day’s festivities.

Home Grown

Domestic bubbles have come leaps and bounds in the last decade, and excellent examples from both Australia and New Zealand can offer oodles of drinking pleasure. Tasmania is the source of much of the quality sparkling wine being produced in Australia today, and one of the island’s foremost producers, Jansz, consistently produce phenomenal wines at phenomenally good prices. Jansz specialises in producing sparkling wines, so they know a thing or two about making seriously delicious wines with freshness and personality in abundance, and a glass or two of their superb Non-Vintage Cuvee will set you up nicely for the day ahead.

The Main Event

After the presents have been opened, the focus rightly turns to the all-important Christmas feast. The hearty Christmas lunch is one of the most highly anticipated meals of the year and is often the only time of year that the whole family gets to gather round the dinner table. Special events deserve special wines, and there’s no more special wines than those of Champagne! The magical sparkling wines from the north of France are rightly celebrated for their effortless ability to enhance any occasion.

With the full spread of seafood, meats and accompaniments, it can be tricky pairing wines to the fare on offer. Not only is champagne a delight to drink by itself, it’s also extremely versatile when it comes to matching with food. The bright acidity and gentle toastiness of quality champagne come together to help liven up the food on your plate and keeps the palate nice and clean so you can work your way through the table. Try the champagnes of the iconic Louis Roederer which are celebrated the world over for their complexity and elegance, with their non-vintage release constantly over-delivering in every department.

Time To Relax

Once the main affair has been devoured and the lazy afternoon ensues, there’s no reason why you can’t continue the indulgences with another bottle of something fizzy. If you want to continue in style, the prestige cuvee release ‘La Grande Dame’ from Veuve Clicquot is hard to look beyond. Rich, concentrated and profound it’s the perfect champagne to really celebrate with aplomb.

Sparkling wines don’t need to be savoured only on special occasions but they certainly help to bring a certain something to special days, so liven up your Christmas by putting some fizz into every element of the day’s festivities!
